Our Piling Methods Explained

Each piling method below is selected for specific site needs. Don’t worry if it sounds technical - our team will guide you every step of the way.

Segmental Flight Auger (SFA) Piling – Standard

This method is good for limited site access and limited headroom.

For works, we will use rigs ranging from 2-tonne, door-entrance drivable rigs that can drill piles from 150mm up to 300mm in diameter (maximum depth 15m), up to 15-tonne piling rigs that can drill from 300mm in diameter up to 450mm in diameter, down to 20m.

Augers come in 1m–1.5m sections and are installed manually, metre by metre, downward. This solution works on clay or chalk grounds.

The bore-formed hole needs to stay formed and open, with no water strikes or gravels. This method is vibration-free.

Mini/Micro Segmental Piling (SFA) Segmental Flight Auger with Hollow Stem Grout/Concrete Injection Through the Augers

This method is good for limited site access and limited height headrooms.

For works, we will use a range of rigs from 3-tonne—rigs that can drill piles from 250mm up to 450mm in diameter, with a maximum depth of 15m—up to 15-tonne piling rigs that can drill from 300mm in diameter up to 600mm in diameter, down to 17m.

Augers come in 1m–1.5m sections and are installed manually, metre by metre, downward. This solution will work on wet, gravelly, sandy ground conditions where an open, steady-formed hole will not be achievable, and the hole will collapse after auger extraction.

This method allows us to pump concrete through the middle of the augers while the augers are slowly taken out from the ground.

The filled concrete will stop the sides of the bored hole from collapsing.

The next step will be to install reinforcement in the hole to finish the pile off while the concrete is still fresh and wet.

This method is vibration-free.

Drop Hammer – Steel Cased Bottom Driven Piles

This solution allows us to install metal tubes into the ground by dropping weight on them, constantly driving them down until the required set is achieved.

Tubes are later cut off to the correct level, then reinforced and concreted.

Driven metal casing piles are good for made-up ground where loose material would not allow a hole to be formed.

Once the tubes penetrate the made-up ground, they begin driving into virgin ground, compacting the existing strata until further penetration is refused or nearly refused.

We can provide diameters from 150mm up to 300mm.

The piling rig we use is a compact 3-tonne rig with 780mm-wide tracking access.

Steel Cased Grundomat Driven Piles

This method offers a similar solution to the Drop Hammer technique, but uses pneumatic air-driven equipment that produces less vibration in the ground compared to the drop hammer method.

While it has a lower load capacity, it is highly effective for small domestic projects.

The Grundomat system allows for nearly unlimited site access, making it an excellent choice for restricted or hard-to-reach areas.

Pile diameters range from 100mm to 150mm

CFA Piling – Continuous Flight Auger

This solution is well suited for semi-open and open sites, such as new builds. The piling rig used depends on the pile specification, ranging from 15-tonne up to 60-tonne rigs.

A string of augers goes into the ground in one continuous action.

Depending on the rig specifications, the augers can reach depths from 12m down to 25m, including the use of a special Kelly bar to assist with deeper drilling.

This method allows piles to be formed very quickly—typically just 10–15 minutes per pile, including concreting. Where possible, we can leave the borehole open or fill it with concrete through the middle of the augers.

We can provide borehole diameters ranging from 300mm up to 600mm.

Rotary Bored Piling (RBA)

This method is ideal where a high load capacity is required, but pile depth is limited.

Rotary piling rigs can achieve exceptionally large diameters, allowing for strong ground bearing based on mass concrete fill rather than extreme depth.

That said, this method can still reach significant depths—up to approximately 25 metres.

It is particularly well suited for clay or chalk ground, where open bore piles can be formed without the need for concreting through an auger. The rigs typically have a telescopic bar with a 1–1.5m auger bit at the end.

The operator spins the auger into the ground to a depth matching the auger length, removes it with the excavated soil resting on the auger, swings the rig aside to unload the soil, and then repeats the process incrementally deeper—step by step—until the required depth is reached
